“Northern Problems” dVerse Open Link #88

Celestial alignment
guides a butterfly’s migration.

A candle’s dance
cannot light its way
with rooted, eager heart,
watching the door close
slowly; poisoning birth’s
pathways,
chaos kills creation,
like a shade shutting
out colours.

Dilemma’s lover
kisses dreams
of flights.

The door closes slowly
on jewels, fluttering
movements in milkweed pastures.

Post note:
Here is the story of the Monarchs’ migration.

  1. dilemna’s lover kisses dreams of flight….what an intriguing line….
chaos kills creation….is an interesting thought as well…there is a certain order to things…even amid the chaos…when you look at the vast solar system and all the little things that had to align to get us here….
dont know that i realized butterflies migrated….

  2. “chaos kills creation”
    yes, this

  3. So finely written and such a sad thing to write about. Yet another species in danger. Will it ever end?

  4. How poignant, beautiful. In Reno we witness that northern migration. There are so many of them that you can’t avoid running over them with your car or whatever…

  5. I have always wished to witness the beauty of this sight, and your poem has made me feel as if I had…. Just lovely

  6. This is a a beautiful poem, Pamela. I am looking forward to the monarchs migrating back to this part of the world sometime soon. it always amazes me how far they travel.

  7. What an amazing butterfly, I never realised they migrated and how far, and how long they live. Such a beautifully sad poem… a shade shutting out colours…that is an awful thought. Thank you for this fabulous poem and the story of these butterflies.

  8. I had seen this story and felt a terrible unease in the pit of my stomach– for my own, selfish sake, I hope that we do not see their demise until my time has passes, altought I will not hold my breath. Thanks for bringing it to our attention 🙂 ~peace, Jason

  9. I am obsessed with butterflys and metamorphosis:
    a great poetic inspiration:
    chaos kills creation,
    like a shade shutting
    out colours. . .

    The butterfly effect 🙂

  10. butterflies . . . my mind is 40 minures till dawn! 🙂

  11. We have Monarchs here in New Zealand as well. I’m now thinking maybe I haven’t seen so many this year…

  12. fluttering
movements in milkweed pastures…just love how this sounds….and feels…very cool..didn’t know this..

  13. Some beautiful lines in this.

  14. Wonderful description. I have read so much about the Monarch Butterfly recently. I hope everyone plants lots of Milkweed so they continue to migrate… 🙂

  15. i love butterflies, ethereal —gotta go, gotta go, gotta go to Mexico… you write beautifully thank you

  16. Dilemma’s lover
    kisses dreams
    of flights.

This stanza is a poem on its own. I feel for the plight of the monarchs. What would happen to us if we lost our symbol of transformation and rebirth? I’m a tree-hugger and proud of it although my family has to say “don’t mind her” sometimes. Beautiful work.

  17. Love the images of migrating butterflies but sad to see “chaos” along the pathway ~

  18. I’ve just come from Rene’s poem about singing sirens bringing disaster to careless sailors to this where the candle spells doom for the poor butterfly. Yikes! Those Monarchs are amazing creatures, aren’t they?

  19. Hi Pam, in Patzcuaro for Day of the Dead we toyed with the idea of traveling to see the monarchs that should have started arriving by Nov1. They were down 85% at that time. Thanks for bringing the plight of the mariposa to light poetically.

  20. The more we control, the more we destroy…all our tinkering with what is beyond us to create seems to be indeed, like ‘a shade shutting out colors..’ into the monochrome monotony of the color of money. A very deft and beautiful piece, pamela, on a subject where we really need the light to shine more strongly.

  21. Delicate but intense – great achievement Pamela – a real pleasure to read… ‘A candle’s dance/cannot light its way/with rooted, eager heart’ that’s pretty special….

  22. Thanks for all the nice comments. Yes, we mustn’t turn a blind eye to this subject. Those who think that the order of things has not been disrupted by our overuse of pesticides, insecticides, or that globing warming has nothing to do with this problem, live in a bubble. I wish the best for them and their children’s children.

  23. My spouse and I stumbled over here from a different web address and thought I should check things out.

I like what I see so i am just following you. Look forward to looking
