Kiosks cry out news today,
buses pass round tree-lined paths,
a yawning cat eyes passersby,
stretching for more sun
Sneaking through an orange door,
cumbia shimmies women’s hips,
teenage girls paint morning’s makeup,
hoping for a glance from boys,
rainbow flowers melt in buckets,
flags fly independence
Beautifully evocative. Please, what is kumbia?
Hi Viv, it is music of Columbia, and my spelling is not correct. It should begin with a “c”, and not a “k”. Though, I have seen it spelt with a “k” here. Not sure why? Thanks for the nice comment 🙂
nice…you capture quite a few textures of the scene…like the cat and the flags…yeah insite on kumbia might be nice…as oposed to my assumption…ha…smiles
Hi Brian, it is music of Columbia, and I have also heard it referred to as a type of dancing. Thanks 🙂
Pam,
Music of Columbia, how different is it to those we are familiar with, like samba, brass band or something. I just wonder. Your verse is beautiful!
Hank
Hank, honestly, I can’t really tell the difference, between samba and cumbia. Thanks.
Lovely scene capture, and whatever the form of music, it shimmying the hips is the important part! ;_) Enjoyed it, pamela–felt like I was there.
Thanks Joy, shimmying the hips is most important 🙂
Lovely– you have painted an excellent portrait of urban life here– love cumbia!xxj
Thanks for the comment, Jenne. Welcome 🙂
Hi Pamela, Rob Kistner here. How are you these days/ This is a piece well written, engaging – good work… mine is here: http://www.image-verse.com/clown
Hi Rob! I haven’t seen you in ages. I hope all is well with you. I miss the Saturday prompt site 😦 Thanks much for visiting and reading.
This a beautifully painted, evocative scene.
Hi Cynthia. Thank you.
Um, I know how to cumbia and I’m not in Columbia. : ) That line sure made me smile! I’m a Texas girl.
Love these lines:
“Kiosks cry out news today”
“a yawning cat eyes passersby”
“Sneaking through an orange door, cumbia shimmies women’s hips,” (love the color orange and love the cumbia!)
Thanks Shawna, and I loved your poem about your painting. Thanks for visiting me.
Sneaking through an orange door,
cumbia shimmies women’s hips,
love the shimming hips – the whole piece moves from scene to scene making up the whole of the day…very nice…bkm
Hi Barb, how are you ? I haven’t seen you in awhile. Thanks.
a nice details scene – felt like I was there with ya 🙂
Sheila 🙂
You’ve painted a festive picture with your words. I enjoyed it very much!
Hi zouxzoux!
This feels golden.
Irene, I enjoyed your poem as well.
So beautiful…
hitching a ride in rusted trails
Thanks Gautami.
What a wonderful word snapshot of the street. I am only wondering about the rainbow flower melting, trying to visualize what they are.
Colleen, every variety you can imagine. Roses, tulips, dahlias, daffodils, birds of paradise. They are all grown in a neighbouring city here called Atlixco. A mini Switzerland by the landscape.
Thanks for visiting and reading.
i can see the flowers in buckets at the news stand.
i like the cat too! i think he is fat, loved and happy. maybe reaching for granary mice in his dreams.
Ha! or he is searching for that mouse in the alley after his nap 🙂
Thanks Jannie for commenting.
Sounds lovely. Maybe a photo to go with it? 🙂
Joseph, thanks and it is. I have thought about taking photos of the area around here and posting them. A future project 🙂
I like this one. You can just feel the hustle and bustle of a busy town and the people interacting with one another. Nicely written.
Lovely, an atmosphere cleverly evoked.
you took me right there with your words..absolutely love the last stanza..
the rainbow flowers and flags fly independence..hmmm
First word here… vivid. Quietly richly vivid. Reading, I do definitely feel that sense of place. Sparse (which this poem is) does not mean without color (which the poem certainly is). Beautiful experience reading this! Big thanks, prompt response well done!!

Pamela, you show so much with those two-line stanzas. It leaves me wanting more – and yet it’s so complete as it is.
